Education:
Nutsakademie Rotterdam and Rietveld-
akademie Amsterdam.
Ceramist since the sixties of
the last century.
Makes objects, installations and durable goods in ceramics. Very interested in work from the ancient past. The objects and installations often consist of assembled parts and sometimes contain other materials like wood and metal.
Themes are mostly universal: steles, memorial stones and outcomes of processes.
Used materials, techniques and methods show that the artist is of the now.
His objects and installations are after unexpected rituals and ceremonies. Irony and humor bring on mysteriousness.
born in Groningen, 1948
In 2021 Hermien will exhibit some of her art in our garden!.
The sculptures of Hermien Buytendijk strongly express her imagination into ceramics. Dreams and wordplays are being built into three dimensional layers by hand. Her motto is:
"Nothing is as it seems"
Her human and animal figures are created like mild mocking birds: self-irony is the basis according to Hermien. I try to capture everyone's personality including their follies and weaknesses. "The sculptures often express my own doings".
Having a
keen sense of the absurd her unica often transcend reality, but still feel recognizable and often deliver a smile. They are hand-crafted using stoneware clay or porcelain. Subsequently, they are baked at a high temperature. In recent years bigger garden sculptures have been created using a thicker layer of glaze of earth tones in combination with a touch of pure gold.
The original work is permanently represented by several galleries, and can regularly be found at Art Fairs.
This motto is also the title of her most recent book "Niets is wat het lijkt" [Eng: "Nothing is what it seems"]

Movement can be seen as a key word in my form-language.
Using very simple strips of glass I try to express movement in my own way.
Glass is a wonderful material of which many people do not know the fantastic properties. It is a very hard material, but also very vulnerable. It seems stiff but yet you can make all forms you desire with it.
Glass offers so much possibilities. For the sculptures I currently make, I use the 'flat glass glueing technique': all my sculptures are built up from tiny building-elements, glass strips, parts, sometimes even smaller than a square centimeter. By applying weldings with a special UV-glue they form one whole.
This technique is in itself very simple, but its elaboration demands a lot: every single strip must be cut to size and must be polished. Only then I can weld them together. Every welding must dry for thirty seconds.

"first of all, I create my works of art out of aesthetic outer shapes. These then reveal the content to me. And sometimes, underneath this first truth there lies more profound truth. If I can get a hold of it, I place it at the disposal of those interested. While doing so, viewers absolutely have to have the opportunity to gain their own experience with the object. Often people give me their eyes and their way of understanding and I can recognize myself anew through them. For these gifts I am very grateful." "I intend to captivate the viewers by means of my aesthetic, to touch them profoundly and drag them into the work of art. Until they encounter themselves. Until they start asking questions and start searching for answers. And perhaps even find answers..."
At a very early age Ellen was struck by the strength of bronze. When she studied at the Academy of Arts in Tilburg (Netherlands) working with bronze became her specialty. During that time she got her inspiration from sculptures by other artists such as Arthur Spronken.
As a result of Ellen's activity in horseback riding, initially dressage and presently western riding, the horse has become a great source of inspiration. Through riding them she can feel the enormous power of these animals and wants to express that power in her sculptures. She always finishes her sculptures herself and especially through the patination, the colouring, she can add another dimension to it.
Ellen's latest work consists of glass vases and slim figures.
The glass is oven melted glass and therefore not created by blowing or fusing. This technique is very laborious.
First a model is sculpted in sculpting wax. A special mould is created around this model which will be melted out of it. This mould and pieces of special glass will go into the oven with a specific
programme for glass.
The programme can take up to several weeks, depending on the
measurements of the sculpture. Several sculptures will get extra lighting, which is done by LED-lights.
Working with glass offers a whole new challenge. In it she looks for the boundaries of what is possible in form and colour. Glass is not always as willing as bronze and it definitely has qualities that binds working with it to certain rules. But this is what makes glass an exiting material to work with and gives an extra feeling of fulfillment when a work of art lives up to its expectations when it comes out of the oven. top of page

Was ist Kunst?
